what happens to the it I seem to go up inside the mast from below the mast fitting, does that not mean it is screened by the mast and how log must it be and does it come out into the open anywhere

If you use a modern 2.4ghz radio control the aerial is very short (a few cm at most) so it can just stick out from the side of the receiver and lay on the receiver tray.
If you use an older type it can be fed up the mast but personally I don't like that idea. I originally used an old 40mhz receiver and fed the aerial through a thin plastic tube I fitted running toward the bow just under the deck. Easy to remove and replace the receiver when necessary and out of sight. Obviously the tube must be fitted before fitting the deck.
