The best fibreglass to use is generally the lightest cloth you can find. It's such a small model. No need for heavy glassing.

West System Epoxy Resins are arguably the best quality and fit for the job. Not the cheapest but do a great job. When you think about saving a few pennies, sometimes it's best to also think about all the time you are spending building this model. The fibreglass is not really the stage of the project to cut corners, so get the best you can afford.

Also a note about glassing.

When fibreglassing the strength comes not from the resin, but the bonding of glass fibres and wood forming a composite structure.

The more excess resin present the weaker the bond will be. This sounds counter intuitive but if you research enough you will find this to be a fact.

Boats like americas cup boats and even hi tech racing models use vacuum bagging and other techniques to squeeze out any excess resin. This produces both a strong and light hull.

So when glassing a racingsparrow try to use less resin to begin with. Focus on wetting out the fibres not coating the hull with a thick layer of resin.

To create a smooth finish use light weight fillers (microballoons) once the fibreglass has set. These are very light weight and easier to sand than just resin on its own.

happy glassing!, Bryn.
